Two desperately poor siblings, sent out of the house by their mother, who get lost in the dark forest despite the trail of breadcrumbs, an insidious crispy witch in the gingerbread house, which despite its sugar-sweet appearance becomes a death trap: the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, above all "Hänsel and Gretel", have fascinated all age groups since they first appeared over 200 years ago. In 1893, Engelbert Humperdinck created the first major musical adaptation of the fairy tale, which has remained in the repertoire of opera houses in an unbroken tradition to this day.
