Hansel and Gretel don't have it easy: Sent into the forest out of anger by their mother, almost frozen to death there from fear and hunger, caught by a wicked witch, fattened and - almost - baked, they end up as youthful heroes, surrounded by Gingerbread scent of the final chorus of the children they freed. Humperdinck's masterpiece has been enchanting audiences of all ages for almost exactly 125 years, and for quite a few of them it must have been the "gateway drug" to the world of opera. Who could, who would also seriously want to evade the dance of melodies that lightly opens the scenery with a few children's songs, in order to plunge them into the romantic gloom of a wolf's lair in the next moment? The contentious family life at home carries over effortlessly into the present day in his musical conversational mode. In the night-dark forest, sand and rope men, evening blessings and dream experiences give the necessary security to - even when cheering! - survive the fight against the witch Rosina Candy Mouth. The taleHansel and Gretel has survived in over seventy versions in the German-speaking world alone. In 1890 Adelheid Wette, the sister of the composer Engelber Humperdinck, wrote a libretto from it. Originally intended as a scenic contribution to a birthday party suitable for children, Humperdinck found this fairytale play so appealing that he developed a great romantic opera from it. Incidentally, Hansel and Gretel was christened by none other than Richard Strauss, who conducted the premiere on December 23, 1893 in Weimar.
