Two children escape from their everyday life, which is characterized by poverty, into a fantasy world. Even the mother sees no way out and in her desperation chases the children away into the forest. The joy of the returning father, who finally brings money home again, is short-lived. where are the kids They make the eerie forest their familiar place and banish hunger and fear with an angelic dream. Her encounter with the witch takes place in a world of food and sweets until she reveals her true colors.
It tells of the blessings and curses of childhood. What was initially planned by the Westphalian Engelbert Humperdinck as a fairy tale play for the family quickly expanded into a grand opera following Mozart's "Magic Flute" or Wagner's "Siegfried". Humperdinck turns romantic forest life into a forest full of dangers. The composer calls his opera "A piece of children's life", which "will not allow the working imagination to rest for a long time". The media scientist Helmut Schanze describes it as an “animated dream of hunger madness”. This masterpiece of the repertoire is a living myth in music, and not only at Christmas time.

Zwei Kinder entfliehen aus ihrem von Armut geprägten Alltag in eine Fantasiewelt. Selbst die Mutter sieht keinen Ausweg und jagt in ihrer Verzweiflung die Kinder fort in den Wald. Die Freude des heimkehrenden Vaters, der endlich wieder einmal Geld nach Hause bringt, ist von kurzer Dauer. Wo sind die Kinder? Diese machen den unheimlichen Wald zu ihrem vertrauten Ort und vertreiben den Hunger und die Angst mit einem Engelstraum. Ihre Begegnung mit der Hexe spielt sich in einer Welt voller Essen und Süßigkeiten ab, bis diese ihr wahres Gesicht offenbart.
Erzählt wird vom Segen und Fluch der Kindheit. Was vom Westfalen Engelbert Humperdinck zunächst als Märchenspiel im Familienkreis geplant war, weitete sich rasch zur Großen Oper in der Nachfolge von Mozarts „Zauberflöte“ oder Wagners „Siegfried“ aus. Humperdinck verwandelt romantisches Waldleben in einen Wald voller Gefahren. Der Komponist nennt seine Oper „Ein Stück Kinderleben“, das „die arbeitende Phantasie lange nicht mehr zur Ruhe“ kommen lässt. Der Medienwissenschaftler Helmut Schanze bezeichnet sie als einen „belebten Hungerwahnsinnstraum“. Dieses Meisterwerk des Repertoires ist ein lebendiger Mythos in Musik, nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit.
