Interview zu „Hedwig and the Angry Inch“

The singer Hedwig plays her rock'n'roll show in the shabbiest taverns of the whole country and tells her story with her songs. Born as Hansel Schmidt in East Berlin, she once fell in love with the American GI Luther. Mother Hedwig gives her ID and name to the son and organizes a gender reassignment so that her child can leave the country as Luther's wife. This fails, however, and what remains is an "angry inch" between Hedwig's legs.

A year later, Hedwig saw the fall of the Wall on television in a run-down trailer park settlement in Kansas. She keeps her head above water with various jobs and meets the shy teenager Tommy Speck. She teaches him everything about music, writes songs for him and gives him the stage name "Tommy Gnosis". But when his career really takes off, Hedwig falls by the wayside again.

Hedwig and the Angry Inchis much more than a glam rock musical about a drag queen from East Berlin. Between the bizarre twists and turns in the protagonist's life, Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell tell in their play, which premiered in New York in 1998, of a border crosser between East and West, between the sexes, between happiness and misery in search of love, recognition and their own identity .
