I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Vincenzo Bellini)

Romeo and Juliet on the lyric stage: Bellini begins the most beautiful love story of all time when it approaches its tragic end. Unlike Shakespeare, Bellini - a composer unparalleled for his marvelous and long melodic lines - foresees Romeo and Juliet to die at the same time, in one of the most touching scenes in opera history. In Bellini's version, the death of the two lovers does not lead to the reconciliation of the two enemy families.

Bellini composed the role of Romeo for a mezzosoprano, thus creating by the two female voices a magnificent contrast to the social environment almost entirely composed of male voices. The belcanto jewel created in 1830 in Venice has subsequently fallen somewhat into oblivion, but it remains one of the most beautiful works of its kind.

For the staging, we were able to secure the collaboration of Yves Lenoir and his team, who recently produced Verdi's “Giovanna d'Arco” which remains in our memory.
