onductor Yevgeny Samoilov proposed to perform the opera The Two Foscari (1844) at the Novaya Opera, having found the score of the work in the archives of the Mariinsky Theatre Library. Evgeny Kolobov as a musician of extraordinary thinking has always been attracted by forgotten masterpieces and he supported this project. So, in 1995, for the first time in modern Russia, the theater team staged a little-known opera written by the young Verdi.

The composer chose a plot from the history of Venice of the XV century - a period of cruel tyranny of the Council of Ten, which was the highest punitive body of the republic. In the center of the opera are tragically noble images of father and son Foscari surrounded by enemies. The ardent patriot young Jacopo Foscari is unjustly accused by the Council of Ten of treason and condemned to eternal exile. His father, the elderly Venetian Doge (ruler of the republic), Francesco Foscari, would like to intercede for his son, but is powerless before the will of the Council. Jacopo suffers at the thought of separation from his family and homeland. As soon as he steps on the galley, he dies. As a result of the intrigues of ill-wishers, the old Foscari loses the title of doge and dies, unable to bear the misfortunes that struck the family.

The opera "The Two Foscari" is an important step towards the psychological disclosure of characters in musical theater. This opera was highly appreciated by Donizetti, who, after listening to it, said: "This man is a genius ... When he finds a theme, he shows it in a way that we can never forget it again."

"'Two Foscari' is a title that may have a second meaning," says director Valeriu Racu of the performance at the Novaya Opera, "not only Foscari the father and Foscari the son, but also two principles in the soul of one hero ... the eternal poles of the tragic: red - white, black - gold - blood, power, old age, passion, death ..."
