Héritier de l'école minimaliste américaine des Terry Riley, Philip Glass ou Steve Reich comme de Ravel ou Debussy, John Adams marque avec cet opéra un tournant dans son œuvre. Le compositeur jette ainsi des ponts vers les maîtres qui révolutionnèrent la comédie musicale : George Gershwin et Leonard Bernstein. Cherchant comme eux à capter le langage populaire de son époque, il se tourne naturellement vers le rock et la pop, notamment dans son instrumentarium, pour les mêler au classique.

C’est au roumain Eugen Jebeleanu, qu’est confiée cette mise en scène. Amateur des sujets de politique et de société, il se plait à interroger les notions de normes sociales, d’identité et de liberté. Nul doute qu’il saura en révéler tout l’esprit de cette véritable fresque de la société urbaine et de ses contradictions.

Heir to the American minimalist school of Terry Riley, Philip Glass or Steve Reich as well as Ravel or Debussy, John Adams marks a turning point in his work with this opera. The composer thus builds bridges with the masters who revolutionized musical comedy: George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. Seeking like them to capture the popular language of his time, he naturally turns to rock and pop, especially in his instrumentarium, to mix them with classical.

The staging is entrusted to the Romanian Eugen Jebeleanu. A lover of political and social subjects, he likes to question the notions of social norms, identity and freedom. There is no doubt that he will be able to reveal the whole spirit of this veritable fresco of urban society and its contradictions.
