In Seville, the happy barber Figaro helps Count Almaviva to conquer the beautiful Rosina. But the latter, seduced by the intentions and serenades of this mysterious troubadour, is the ward of old Doctor Bartolo who watches her greedily hoping, with the help of the cunning Don Basilio, to marry her as soon as possible... Incredible adventures will end up make love triumph!

From 1815, the notoriety of Gioachino Rossini is extraordinary. At the musical direction of the San Carlo Theater in Naples, he fell in love with the prima donna, the Spanish mezzo-soprano Isabella Colbran, mistress of the famous impresario Barbaja. He will marry her in 1822 in Bologna. He traveled to all the major cities of Italy, composed for Rome and had Il Barbiere di Siviglia performed , based on the revolutionary-minded French comedy by Beaumarchais that Paisiello and so many other composers had already treated.

The work is brilliant, hilarious and of formidable vocal difficulty. Rossini's singing flourishes marvelously there, as shown by Rosina's famous aria, “Una voce poco fa”. Composed in just a few days and taking up several passages from one of his previous dramas, Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra, Il Barbiere was very poorly received.

Numerous stage incidents, the novelty of the music, the hostility and cabals of Paisiello's supporters made the premiere a bitter failure. However, the triumph, never denied thereafter, soon presents itself and Rossini, receiving the highest honors, becomes the greatest living Italian composer.

À Séville, l’heureux barbier Figaro aide le Comte Almaviva à conquérir la belle Rosina. Mais celle-ci, séduite par les intentions et les sérénades de ce mystérieux troubadour, est la pupille du vieux Docteur Bartolo qui la surveille avec avidité en espérant, aidé du rusé Don Basilio, l’épouser au plus vite… De rocambolesques aventures finiront par faire triompher l’amour !

Dès 1815, la notoriété de Gioachino Rossini est extraordinaire. À la direction musicale du Théâtre San Carlo de Naples, il s’éprend de la prima donna, la mezzo-soprano espagnole Isabella Colbran, maîtresse du célèbre impresario Barbaja. Il l’épousera en 1822 à Bologne. Il voyage dans toutes les grandes villes d’Italie, compose pour Rome et fait représenter Il Barbiere di Siviglia, d’après la comédie française à l’esprit révolutionnaire de Beaumarchais que Paisiello et tant d’autres compositeurs avaient déjà traitée.

L’œuvre est brillante, désopilante et d’une redoutable difficulté vocale. Le chant rossinien s’y épanouit merveilleusement comme le montre le célèbre air de Rosina, « Una voce poco fa ». Composé en quelques jours seulement et reprenant plusieurs passages de l’un de ses précédents drames, Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra, Il Barbiere est très mal accueilli.

De nombreux incidents de scène, la nouveauté de la musique, l’hostilité et les cabales des partisans de Paisiello font de la première un échec cuisant. Pourtant, le triomphe, jamais démenti par la suite, se présente bientôt et Rossini, recevant les plus grands honneurs, devient le plus grand compositeur italien vivant.
