«Севільський цирульник» – опера-буффа за французькою п’єсою – одна з тих, про які Стендаль говорив, що потрібно закривати очі на всі недоладності і «тільки помирати від сміху і задоволення».

Джоаккіно Россіні написав оперу «Севільський цирульник» в дивовижно короткий строк – за двадцять днів (інші джерела стверджують, що опера писалась близько двох тижнів). Над жодною з опер Россіні не працював з таким завзяттям, як над цим твором. За його особистим зізнанням, він «творив музику скрізь: і коли гуляв, і коли їв, і коли стояв, лежав, одним словом – постійно».

Вперше опера була поставлена на сцені римського театру «Арджентіна» 20 лютого 1816 року. Наступного вечора, всупереч очікуванням, зал був переповнений. Глядачі прийшли розважитися, можливо, в надії, що каскад випадковостей повториться знову. Але опера склала зовсім інше враження, вона підкорила всіх. Захоплена публіка аплодувала кожній арії! «Мій «Цирульник» з кожним днем користується все більшим успіхом, – писав Россіні, – і навіть до найзапекліших противників нової школи він зумів так підлизатися, що вони мимоволі починають все сильніше любити цього спритного хлопця».

Верді писав: «…я все одно вважаю, що «Севільський цирульник» за своїм багатством ідей, за яскравістю комічного звучання і правдою декламації є найпрекраснішою з усіх існуючих опер-буффа».

Gioacchino Rossini wrote the opera "The Barber of Seville" in a surprisingly short period of time - in twenty days (other sources claim that the opera was written in about two weeks). On none of the operas did Rossini work with such zeal as on this work. According to his personal confession, he "made music everywhere: when he was walking, when he was eating, and when he was standing, lying down, in a word - constantly."

The opera was first performed on the stage of the Roman theater "Argentina" on February 20, 1816. However, "The Barber of Seville" is not the original name of this opera, although it is based on the play of the same name by Pierre Auguste Caron de Beaumarchais. Rossini's opera was originally called "Almaviva, or the vain warning". The reason for renaming the opera was that "The Barber of Seville" was set to music by Giovanni Paisello thirty years ago. But, despite the renaming, supporters of the old meter made a fuss at the premiere of Rossini's opera and booed it. It was said that Rossini had left the theater stealthily. The detractors were also helped by a series of accidents that happened during the performance: the actor who performed the role of Basilio fell and injured himself; Almaviva broke a string on her guitar during the serenade; a cat appeared on the stage at a very unfortunate moment. the next evening contrary to expectations, the hall was full. Spectators came to have fun, perhaps in the hope that the cascade of coincidences will repeat itself again. But the opera made a completely different impression, it conquered everyone. Enthusiastic audience applauded every aria! "My "Barber" is becoming more and more successful every day," wrote Rossini, "and he managed to win over even the staunchest opponents of the new school so much that they involuntarily begin to love this clever boy more and more."

Verdi wrote: "...I still think that the "Barber of Seville" for its wealth of ideas, for the brightness of the comic sound and the truth of the declamation is the most beautiful of all existing opera buffa."
