Il Re Pastore was composed in 1775 on the occasion of Prince Maximilian Frans's visit to Salzburg.

 Maximilian Frans knew Mozart from his youth and was doomed to spend the rest of his life as archbishop, to the honor and glory of his family. A marriage was out of the question for this 19-year-old; his life was already planned out.

Coincidentally or not, the opera performance he was to attend that evening was about the question to what extent love can be rationalized, to what extent it can be exchanged. Aminta and Elisa, two lovers, are separated in this opera when it turns out that one of them is not a shepherd, but a king. This king, of course, needs a royal wife and so another relationship, that of Agenore and Tamiri, is destroyed as well. All this 'for a good cause'. Must love always give way to duty, career, and other interests? Does pure love exist only during childhood? With this opera Mozart wrote an emotional farewell to carelessness, to a life full of possibilities. It is a farewell to pure love, but fortunately there is a happy ending. At least in the opera.

With his interpretation of Il Re Pastore , Ramsey Nasr goes beyond the mere anecdote, which only served as a historical background for telling a conventional story. With his poetic narration, apart from all updating, he immerses the viewer in a world where fantasy and imagination give meaning to the story. Ramsey Nasr wants to create an organic, human piece that moves in a subtle and ambiguous way.

Besides the guiding theme of parting from pure love, purity, youth, very human themes are discussed, such as the manipulation of people and their mutual relationships, and the tendency of the great to impose their opinions on others as The truth.

Il Re Pastore werd in 1775 gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het bezoek dat prins Maximiliaan Frans aan Salzburg bracht.

 Maximiliaan Frans kende Mozart nog uit zijn jeugd en was gedoemd om zijn verdere leven als aartsbisschop te slijten, tot eer en glorie van zijn familie. Een huwelijk zat er voor deze 19-jarige niet in; zijn leven was al uitgestippeld.

De operavoorstelling die hij die avond zou bijwonen, ging – toeval of niet – over de vraag in hoeverre liefde te beredeneren valt, in hoeverre zij inwisselbaar is. Aminta en Elisa, twee geliefden, worden in deze opera uit elkaar gehaald wanneer blijkt dat een van hen geen herder is, maar een koning. Deze koning heeft natuurlijk een koninklijke echtgenote nodig en daarom wordt een andere relatie, die van Agenore en Tamiri, eveneens kapotgemaakt. Dit alles ‘voor het goede doel’. Moet liefde altijd wijken voor plicht, carrière en andere belangen? Bestaat de pure liefde slechts tijdens de jeugd? Mozart schreef met deze opera een emotioneel afscheid van de zorgeloosheid, van een leven vol mogelijkheden. Het is een afscheid van de pure liefde, maar gelukkig is er een happy end. In de opera althans.

Ramsey Nasr gaat met zijn interpretatie van Il Re Pastore verder dan de pure anekdote, die slechts als historische achtergrond moest dienen voor het vertellen van een conventioneel verhaal. Los van alle actualisering dompelt hij met zijn poëtische vertelling de toeschouwer onder in wereld waar fantasie en verbeelding het verhaal zin geven. Ramsey Nasr wil een organisch, menselijk stuk maken dat op een subtiele en meerduidige wijze ontroert.

Naast het leidthema van het afscheid van de pure liefde, de zuiverheid, de jeugd, komen heel menselijke thema’s aan de orde, zoals de manipulatie van mensen en hun onderlinge relaties, en de neiging van de groten om hun mening aan anderen op te leggen als DE waarheid.
