The cloak was originally a French “grand guignol” that Puccini saw in Paris and captured his imagination in the openly naturalistic nature of the plot. In the play, a justifiably jealous husband takes revenge on his wife’s lover. Puccini sought to stick to the then very fashionable French style. The first version of the textbook did not prove to be harsh and ordinary enough for the maestro, so he contacted an Italian writer living in Paris to help stifle the dialogues with the missing “spoken language” twists .
