Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, one of the most popular melodrama in the Verdian repertoire, is made up of four acts and eight pictures on a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano and Leone Emanuele Bardare from El Trovador by Antonio García Gutiérrez.

Composed between 1851 and 1852, after the success of Rigoletto and while he already corresponded with Francesco Maria Piave for the libretto of La Traviata, the new opera stems from the Spanish drama El Trovador, which stages an intricate family history, full of classics literary topoi. Salvadore Cammarano died shortly after having finished writing the libretto, so much so that Verdi, wanting to make some changes to the text, asked for the collaboration of Leone Emanuele Bardare. Everything revolves around a tragic event twenty years earlier: the gypsy Azucena, in revenge for the stake in which the Count di Luna killed her mother, kidnapped her infant son and killed him in her turn; however, making a mistake, she kills her own child on a stake, instead bringing up the count's son with her, who, unaware of her birthplace, becomes the troubadour Manrico. She falls in love, reciprocated by the beautiful Leonora, however promised to the Count di Luna, son of his predecessor, who after alternating events arrests Azucena and Manrico. Leonora poisons herself out of love, the Count kills Manrico out of jealousy, and Azucena reveals to him the fratricide she committed without knowing it.
