The corpus of the composer's dramatic works already included patriotic subjects or taken from English (William Shakespeare, Lord Byron), French (Victor Hugo), German (Friedrich Schiller) romantic literature when he approached the writings of his Spanish contemporary Antonio García Gutiérrez (1813 -1884) and the drama El trovador . The action of the opera The Troubadour , carried out during the four suggestively titled acts ( The Duel, The Gypsy, The Gypsy's Son and The Punishment) is set in 15th century Spain and centers on Count Alvaro de Luna, Manrico and Countess Leonora de Seze, with whom both men are in love. The plot of the story is not limited to the jealousy that the Count of Luna feels towards his rival, the troubadour Manrico, whom Leonora, in turn, loves. The disappearance many years ago of the count's brother Garcia, abducted and apparently killed by an old witch, echoes in the present: as the count seeks to avenge his brother, the gypsy Azucena—the burned witch's daughter and mother to Manrico - seeks to punish the de Luna family harshly.
