Great political music theater! Composer Luigi Nono's belief in the power of art was great and is worth examining, not least in times like these. An encouragement to speak out where we do not want to put up. A guest worker flees from the juggernaut of a mining settlement. He leaves his uncomprehending wife behind and, while looking for a way home, gets caught up in political unrest, is innocently interrogated, tortured and locked up in a concentration camp. He experiences brutality and arbitrariness, as well as solidarity. Can flee, wants to fight, against injustice, finds support in the love of a mate. Eventually he ends up stranded in a village that is being swept away by the tides of a flood. The last words of the chorus come from the poem by Bertolt Brecht To those born later: »... you, when the time comes that man is a helper to man, think of us with indulgence.« Musically, Nono uses a freely handled seriality that retains powerful colors and emotional permeability in its high complexity. Framed by two large contemplative choirs, the composer vehemently demonstrates the grievances of a dysfunctional society. The final flood seems a frighteningly plausible consequence of human inadequacy today, even more than when it arose. Director Marco Štorman finds his way beyond illustrative images: the real battles rage within. Márton Ágh's stage design, which takes up the entire stage building, pulls everyone into the middle of the action and makes palpable what may come when the tide has gone: silence.
