Already this Saturday, the 76th season of NOVAT will be opened by the premiere of the opera Iolanta! The performer of the title role, soloist of the opera troupe of the theater Sofia Bachaeva spoke about preparing for the role and about working on the production under the direction of

P. I. Tchaikovsky’s last opera, Iolanta, is rightfully considered one of the brightest and most lyric pieces of his repertoire. It was conceived in 1891 after Henrik Hertz’ King René’s Daughter, with libretto written by the composer’s brother Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The most charming aspect of Iolanta is the absence of inner conflicts and sufferings, or any dramatic confrontations. All we see is the protagonist’s inner world, full of light, harmony, patience and serenity.

“I’m going to write an opera that will make everyone weep”- said Tchaikovsky about Iolanta. Clearly, he succeeded, only the audience weep with joy and happiness for the characters. King René’s daughter Iolanta lost her sight when she was a little child. Driven by father’s immense love he prohibited everyone to talk about eyesight so that Iolanta thought she was not much different from all the others. She was raised with love and care and grew up to be tender and understanding princess, ignorant of the darkness surrounding her. But everything changed after an unexpected meeting with Count Vaudémont – he told the girl that her eyes are made not only for crying. King René tells Vaudémont that he will be executed unless his daughter recovers her sight. However, Iolanta’s tender heart makes her believe that one day she will be able to see the face of her brave knight.

Последняя опера Петра Ильича Чайковского – «Иоланта» – по праву считается одним из самых светлых и лирических сочинений композитора. Она была написана в 1891 году по поэтической драме Генриха Герца «Дочь короля Рене», либреттистом выступил брат композитора – Модест Ильич Чайковский. Главное очарование «Иоланты» в том, что в ней нет душевных страданий и мук, нет драматических столкновений. Перед нами внутренний мир героини, полный света, спокойствия, гармонии и ясности духа.

«Я напишу такую оперу, что все будут плакать» - говорил П.И. Чайковский. И ему это удалось, вот только слёзы появляются от радости и счастья за героев. Слепая дочь короля Рене, принцесса Иоланта, потеряла зрение еще в глубоком детстве. Любовь отца была настолько безграничной, что король запретил всем говорить о возможности видеть – Иоланта думала, что ничем не отличается от других. Ее воспитывали в доброте и заботе, принцесса выросла чуткой и нежной, не замечая вечной тьмы вокруг. Но все изменилось с внезапным появлением рыцаря Готфрида Водемона – он рассказал девушке, что глаза нужны не только для того, чтобы плакать… Король Рене отчаянно заявляет, что казнит юношу, если Иоланта не прозреет. Но трепетное чувство в сердце хрупкой девушки заставляет поверить Иоланту, что когда-нибудь она увидит лицо прекрасного рыцаря.
