The story of the tantalid curse of revenge, hatred, sacrifice, fatal entanglements and murder has lost none of its cruel fascination over the centuries. Countless playwrights, authors and composers have dealt with the dark, ancient family drama of the military leader Agamemnon, his wife Clytemnestra and their children Iphigenia, Orestes and Elektra. The French libretto for Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera Iphigénie en Tauride , written by Nicolas-François Guillard based on Euripides, also harbors emotional and conflict potential aimed at emotional shaking. Iphigenie was saved from being sacrificed by her father. Now she lives on the island of the Taurians and has the task of killing every stranger who seeks refuge here. The bloody downfall of her family haunts her in her dreams. She does not know that her brother Oreste escaped the killing. Years later she sees him and his friend Pylades, who are taken prisoner by the taurians, again. But the siblings do not recognize each other. But since the stranger reminds her of Oreste, Iphigenie decides to save him. But he wants to die in Pylades' place. During the act of sacrifice, the siblings recognize each other. When Thoas, the king of the Scythians, wants to kill Oreste, Pylades suddenly appears and murders the king. The people praised the dawning peace and the end of the warlike times among the Taurians. In 1779 Gluck experienced the greatest success of his life in Paris with the premiere of Iphigénie en Tauride . In this work, the ambitious composer succeeded in implementing his reform ideas to the last resort and in giving musical theater more truthfulness again. His view of the ancient myth is a plea for the values of humanity; at the same time, Gluck opened the door to modern musical drama with Iphigénie en Tauride .
