Israel in Egypt holds a somewhat special place in Handel's work: entirely written on sacred texts (this will also be the case with Messiah two years later), it was intended to be performed in theatres, which disconcerted the audience at the time of creation. In addition, he shows a particularly marked leaning towards a choral vocality, the choruses far exceeding in number the arias and duets. This opulent writing contributes to making the score a gripping work, which evokes the great moments of the biblical story (the plagues of Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea) with vivid realism.

Israël en Égypte tient dans l’œuvre de Haendel une place un peu particulière : entièrement écrit sur des textes sacrés (ce sera aussi le cas de Messiah deux ans plus tard), il était destiné à être représenté dans des théâtres, ce qui désarçonna le public de l’époque de la création.
