Based on an autobiographical text by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leos Janacek wrote the libretto for his last opera himself. For a long time, both the text were available as well as the sparingly orchestrated music for "Aus einer Totenhaus" misunderstood as "unfinished" and often reworked; meanwhile the opera in its original form has long been recognized as an outstanding and extremely lively work of musical theater. Director Peter Konwitschny, from the magazine "Opernwelt" Elected "Director of the Year" five times, works for the first time at the Zurich Opera House; he tells "From the House of the Dead" from a radically contemporary perspective: the scene of the event is not the distant Siberian prison camp, which Janacek used as a foil for the prisoners' stories had served her life; Konwitschny sees "being trapped" rather as being trapped in a certain society and its sometimes cruel rituals. Ingo Metzmacher designed the musical direction, stage and costumes, Johannes Leiacker.

Mit Jenůfa gelang dem tschechischen Komponisten Leoš Janáček eine Oper von geradezu atemberaubender emotionaler Wucht. Die berührende Geschichte um Jenůfa und ihre Stiefmutter, die Küsterin, spielt in einer Gemeinschaft, die geprägt ist von Enge, Angst vor der Zukunft, Neid und Eifersucht. Die Liebe Jenůfas zu Števa ist in dieser Gemeinschaft zum Scheitern verurteilt, und Jenůfas uneheliche Schwangerschaft führt in die Katastrophe. Denn die Küsterin, die von Jenůfas Schicksal an ihre eigene, von Demütigungen und seelischen Verletzungen geprägte Vergangenheit erinnert wird, sieht nur einen Ausweg, um Jenůfas Zukunft zu retten: Sie nimmt Jenůfa ihr neugeborenes Kind weg, das Kind stirbt. Die erfolgreiche Inszenierung des russischen Regisseurs Dmitri Tcherniakov zeigt keine tschechische Dorfgesellschaft, sondern nimmt die drei Frauen – Jenůfa, die Küsterin und die Alte Buryja – aus drei verschiedenen Generationen und ihre komplizierten Beziehungen zueinander zum Ausgangspunkt der tragischen Entwicklungen. Die Wiederaufnahme versammelt noch einmal die Premierenbesetzung; Pavel Cernoch übernimmt neu den Števa. Die musikalische Leitung hat Patrick Lange.

With Jenůfathe Czech composer Leoš Janáček created an opera of almost breathtaking emotional power. The touching story about Jenůfa and her stepmother, the sexton, takes place in a community characterized by narrowness, fear of the future, envy and jealousy. Jenůfa's love for Števa is doomed to fail in this community, and Jenůfa's illegitimate pregnancy leads to catastrophe. Because the sexton, who is reminded by Jenůfa's fate of her own past, marked by humiliation and mental injuries, sees only one way to save Jenůfa's future: she takes her newborn child away from Jenůfa, and the child dies. The successful production by Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov does not show a Czech village society, but takes the three women - Jenůfa, the sexton and the old Buryja - from three different generations and their complicated relationships to each other at the starting point of the tragic developments. The revival reassembles the premiere cast; Pavel Cernoch takes over the Števa. Patrick Lange is the musical director.
