The St. John Passion is the earliest of the passion music by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) known today. The work was premiered on Good Friday, April 7, 1724, in the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig. Bach revised and changed the work several times for later performances, but its last version from 1749 shows close references to the first version. Framed by two large choral movements, Bach unfolds the passion story of the capture and crucifixion of Jesus Christ and musically traces its stations and emotions. The textbook is based on Chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel of John, supplemented by chorales and freely composed texts; the focus is on the confrontation between Jesus and Pilate.

Bach's pictorial and expressive musical implementation of the text, its compositional diversity and daring chromatics make the plot almost physically perceptible. The drama develops through the lecturer's changing perspectives: the narrator's recitatives and the acting ensembles of the turba choirs drive the action forward, while arias and chorales reflect what has been heard and turn the gaze inward.

Hans Henning Paar brings the oratorio work for four-part choir, vocal soloists and orchestra to the stage as a combination of dance, abstract scene, space and light. Inspired by the emotionality of the composition, associative images are created that deal with the question of what belief and passion mean for the individual and what role they play in today's society.
