"Knots of Time": concert-presentation of a monograph about Andrei Volkonsky: Concert

Князь Андрей Михайлович Волконский – потомок знаменитого декабриста, композитор, органист и клавесинист – стоит у истоков сразу двух крупных течений в советской музыке: послевоенного авангарда и исторически информированного исполнительства.

Он родился в Женеве, учился в Женеве и Париже, в 1947 году семья репатриировалась в Советский Союз и поселилась в Тамбове. Волконский смог поступить в Московскую государственную консерваторию, которую, тем не менее, не окончил, не сдав курс марксизма-ленинизма. С 1962 года композитор пишет «в стол» – исполнение его музыки официально запрещено. В 1965 году он основывает ансамбль старинной музыки «Мадригал», с которым гастролирует по всему Советскому союзу и странам социалистического блока. В 1973 году Волконский эмигрирует на Запад, где ведет активную исполнительскую деятельность и пишет музыку. Последние его сочинения датированы 1990-ми годами.

Роль Андрея Волконского в старинной и современной музыке его современники и последователи оценивают исключительно высоко. По словам Эдисона Денисова, «он первый открыл те двери, за которыми мы искали новое в искусстве». Альфред Шнитке вспоминал: «Волконский писал очень мало, но очень интересно. И появление время от времени сочинений Волконского – это каждый раз было большое событие, оказывающее воздействие на многих». Гидон Кремер специально к выходу монографии о «Князе Андрее, как его называли друзья, писал: «Андрей Волконский был чрезвычайно яркой личностью. Личность эта не только “просвещала”, но и “освещала” для многих малознакомые пространства музыки Прошлого. Как “Мадригал” Волконского завораживал любителей музыки в 60-е и 70-е годы, так его мысли и его судьба заставляют размышлять о многом важном для каждого из нас и сегодня».

Новая монография петербургского издательства Jaromír Hladík press «Узелки времени. Эпоха Андрея Волконского. Воспоминания, письма, исследования» – объемный сборник трудов Волконского и о Волконском. Здесь собраны собственные тексты композитора, воспоминания о нем родных, друзей и коллег и теоретические материалы о его творчестве. Впервые опубликованы хронология жизни Андрея Волконского, полный аннотированный каталог его произведений, полная дискография. Приведены не опубликованные ранее страницы переписки, бесед и мемуаров, а также некоторая часть уже публиковавшихся текстов. Систематизированы отклики советской и зарубежной прессы на премьеры сочинений и концерты Волконского.  Редакторы-составители монографии – Елена Дубинец, Ирина Микаэлян, Алексей Любимов, Игорь Блажков, Владимир Бойков.

Об Андрее Волконском на презентации этого мощного издания будут рассуждать знатоки старинной и современной музыки, его соратники, очевидцы его взлетов в 1960-70-е годы: пианист и клавесинист Алексей Любимов, музыковед и органистка Марианна Высоцкая, музыковеды Иосиф Райскин, Алексей Мунипов. Концерт из произведений самого Андрея Волконского и репертуара его прославленного ансамбля «Мадригал» станет самой наглядной иллюстрацией к презентуемой книге и разговору о значении личности Волконского в истории музыки и культуры.

Prince Andrei Mikhailovich Volkonsky, a descendant of the famous Decembrist, composer, organist and harpsichordist, stands at the origins of two major trends in Soviet music at once: post-war avant-garde and historically informed performance.

He was born in Geneva, studied in Geneva and Paris, in 1947 the family repatriated to the Soviet Union and settled in Tambov. Volkonsky was able to enter the Moscow State Conservatory, which, however, he did not graduate without passing the course of Marxism-Leninism. Since 1962, the composer has been writing "on the table" - the performance of his music is officially prohibited. In 1965, he founded the Madrigal ensemble of early music, with which he toured throughout the Soviet Union and the countries of the socialist bloc. In 1973, Volkonsky emigrated to the West, where he was active in performing and writing music. His last compositions date back to the 1990s.

The role of Andrei Volkonsky in ancient and modern music is highly appreciated by his contemporaries and followers. According to Edison Denisov, "he was the first to open those doors behind which we were looking for something new in art." Alfred Schnittke recalled: “Volkonsky wrote very little, but very interesting. And the appearance from time to time of Volkonsky's works was a great event every time, influencing many. Gidon Kremer, especially for the release of a monograph on “Prince Andrei, as his friends called him, wrote: “Andrey Volkonsky was an extremely bright personality. This personality not only “enlightened”, but also “illuminated” for many unfamiliar spaces of the music of the Past. Just as Volkonsky’s Madrigal fascinated music lovers in the 60s and 70s, so his thoughts and his fate make us think about many things that are important for each of us today.”

A new monograph by the St. Petersburg publishing house Jaromír Hladík press “Knots of Time. The era of Andrei Volkonsky. Memoirs, Letters, Research” is a voluminous collection of works by Volkonsky and about Volkonsky. Here are collected the composer's own texts, memoirs of his relatives, friends and colleagues, and theoretical materials about his work. A chronology of Andrei Volkonsky's life, a complete annotated catalog of his works, and a complete discography have been published for the first time. Previously unpublished pages of correspondence, conversations and memoirs are given, as well as some of the texts that have already been published. The responses of the Soviet and foreign press to the premieres of Volkonsky's compositions and concerts are systematized. The editors and compilers of the monograph are Elena Dubinets, Irina Mikaelyan, Alexei Lyubimov, Igor Blazhkov, Vladimir Boykov.

Connoisseurs of ancient and modern music, his associates, eyewitnesses of his rises in the 1960s and 70s: pianist and harpsichordist Alexei Lyubimov, musicologist and organist Marianna Vysotskaya, musicologists Iosif Raiskin, Alexei Munipov will talk about Andrei Volkonsky at the presentation of this powerful publication. The concert from the works of Andrei Volkonsky himself and the repertoire of his famous ensemble "Madrigal" will be the most vivid illustration of the book being presented and the conversation about the significance of Volkonsky's personality in the history of music and culture.
