When he last stood on the podium of the Konzerthausorchester in the fall of 2020, Jörg Widmann thrilled audiences with his energy and musicality. Performing then as conductor, composer and clarinet soloist, this time he has arrived without his clarinet to give the solo spotlight to a very rare instrument – the glass harmonica. On it, Christa Schönfeldinger plays Mozart, in whose time the ethereal-sounding “friction idiophone” was quite in demand in Europe’s concert halls. This boom lasted until about 1830. Widmann uses the exotic instrument in his orchestral work “Armonica”, in which it is not only featured, but also becomes the model for orchestral sound itself. The two works are framed by Mozart’s fast-paced overture to “The Marriage of Figaro” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, already a triumphant success when it premiered in 1812.

Als er im Herbst 2020 zuletzt am Pult des Konzerthausorchesters stand, begeisterte Jörg Widmann den Saal mit enormer Lebendigkeit und Musikalität. Damals als Dirigent, Komponist und Klarinettensolist präsent, kommt er dieses Mal ohne Klarinette, um stattdessen einem sehr seltenen Instrument den Solopart zu überlassen: Der Glasharmonika, auf der Solistin Christa Schönfeldinger Mozart spielt.

Zu dessen Zeit wurde das ätherisch klingende „Reibidiophon“ in Europas Konzertsälen begeistert gefeiert. Der Boom hielt allerdings nur bis etwa 1830 an. Als Komponist hat Widmann der Exotin mit „Armonica“ vor ein paar Jahren ein neues Stück geschaffen. Darin ist sie nicht nur selbst besetzt, sondern stellenweise auch Vorbild für den Orchesterklang.

Eingerahmt werden die beiden Werke mit Glasharmonika von Mozarts rasanter Ouvertüre zu „Figaros Hochzeit“ und Beethovens Sinfonie Nr. 7, die bereits bei ihrer Uraufführung 1812 ein ungeheurer Erfolg war.
