1848 is the year of riots, uprisings and revolutions in many European countries. Verdi finished his opera "Il Corsaro" in France and returned to Milan. Here, as in Parma and Modena, the ruling Austrians are driven out of the city; Venice even proclaims itself an independent republic. The goal now is national self-determination and unity in Italy.
Verdi is an ardent supporter of the patriotic idea and is looking for suitable material for a patriotic opera that deals with the theme of "Risorgimento", the national unification of Italy, and convinces the audience of the necessity of this movement. With his librettist Salvadore Cammarano, Verdi edited the play "La battaille de Toulouse" by Joseph Méry and moved the action from France to Italy: The background is now the war of the Lombard League, a northern Italian league of cities in the Middle Ages, against Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who died with the Confederate victory ended at the Battle of Legnano in 1176.
