Ich habe mein Leben lang darüber nachgedacht, wie es wäre, wenn ich »La bohème« inszenieren würde. Jetzt tue ich es. Als ich die Produktion vorbereitete, erkannte ich: Das ist kein Stück, das man inszeniert. Es inszeniert dich.
Normalerweise heißt es, Wagner habe das Gesamtkunstwerk geschaffen. Mir scheint: »La bohème« ist Gesamtkunstwerk in viel umfassenderem Sinne. Puccinis musikalische Regie führt Gefühle und Gesten so zwingend, dass man das Werk zerstören würde, würde man ihr nicht folgen. Bei Wagner gibt es viele kreative Spielräume zwischen Schwarz und Weiß, in »La bohème« ist jeder Gang, jede Geste durch die Musik vorgeschrieben.
Das hat mich zu einer – hoffentlich – tragfähigen Konzeption gebracht. Wir werden der von Puccini festgelegten Realität dieser Musik entsprechen. Darüber hinaus enthält sie aber noch etwas Anderes. Die Herausforderung besteht für mich, die Darsteller*innen und das Publikum darin, sich diesem Anderen zu stellen. Das Stück konfrontiert uns von Anfang an mit dem Tod. Es ist eine Konfrontation mit der Endlichkeit, der Abwesenheit von Bedeutung, dem Nichts. Die Autoren, ihre Figuren, aber auch diejenigen, die sie zum Leben erwecken, stellen sich hier ihrer tiefsten Angst: derjenigen, dass das alles keinen Sinn hat.

»La bohème« konfrontiert uns nicht nur mit unserer Todesangst, sondern präziser mit der Sinnlosigkeit allen Tuns. Darin liegt meiner Meinung nach die Tiefe dieses großen Werks. (Walter Sutcliffe)

Six young people make their way through life with precarious work: poet Rodolfo works at the newspaper and dreams of breaking through as a playwright. Marcello paints advertisements on house walls. Philosopher Colline makes a living from private lessons. Musician Schaunard strums his way through the bars. Mimì embroiders flowers onto decorative ribbons. Musetta keeps solvent lovers.
Puccini's opera tells of youth. Everyone starts out full of illusions. Some make their dream come true. And then this: Mimì is terminally ill. Rodolfo falls in love with her. But after the party comes the reality: How do you live with a dying person? We avoid death, failure. But sooner or later reality catches up with us. »La bohème« tells of relationships and our encounter with death. This is what our new production focuses on.

Walter Sutcliffe: »I've thought all my life about what it would be like if I directed “La bohème”. Now I do. When I was preparing the production, I realized: This is not a play that you stage. It stages you. It is usually said that Wagner created the total work of art. It seems to me: “La bohème” is a total work of art in a much broader sense. Puccini's musical direction directs feelings and gestures so compellingly that not following it would destroy the work. In Wagner there is a lot of creative scope between black and white, in “La bohème” every walk, every gesture is dictated by the music. This led me to a – hopefully – viable concept. We will correspond to the reality of this music set by Puccini. But beyond that it contains something else. The challenge for me, the actors and the audience is to face this other. The play confronts us with death from the beginning. It is a confrontation with finitude, the absence of meaning, nothingness. The authors, their characters, but also those who bring them to life face their deepest fear: the one that it all has no meaning. “La bohème” confronts us not only with our fear of death, but more precisely with the meaninglessness of all our actions. In my opinion, this is where the depth of this great work lies.«
