Don Magnifico is in financial trouble. Therefore he wants to marry one of his daughters Tisbe and Clorinda to Prince Don Ramiro. But it is not they who win the young nobleman's heart, but of all things the stepsister Angelina, the Cinderella, who is mocked by them.

Incidentally, the music critic Eduard Hanslick (1825-1904), feared for his severe judgment, really got into raptures about Rossini's masterpiece: "'La Cenerentola' lets a fragrant blossom rain of melodies descend on us, a wealth of simple, unsought and yet never failing effects; her musical merits, her busy dramatic life stamp her as Rossini's best opera buffa alongside The Barber."
