First staged at the Opéra-Comique on 11 February 1840, it is repeated 55 times. Resumed in 1848, it remained in the repertoire until 1916, being performed more than a thousand times. One of Donizetti's best-known and most popular theatrical comedies - in particular for the famous tenor aria Ah! mes amis, that jour de fête! with nine C in a row - it involves the audience in its delicious balance between pieces of skill, military marches and lyrical and dreamy parentheses, which mark the story of Marie and Tonio.
