Giuseppe Verdi's Power of Destiny (1862-1869) begins with the scene of Donna Leonora's and Don Alvar's evening tryst . The girl's father, the Marquis di Calatrava, crashes. Don Alvaro pulls out a pistol, probably a flintlock, because these were used in the 18th century. The weapon fires without his will, and the stray bullet kills the old man on the spot. Terrified lovers run away, each in their own direction, although they planned to run away together. If it reminds you of Don Giovanni Mozart and the death of the Commander at the hand of his daughter's seducer, then it is good intuition. A certain prince Rivas, author of the Spanish drama on the basis of which Verdi's opera was based, borrowed literary from Tirso de Molina and his Don Juan, in which the Commander is called Calatrava, and the story is also set in Seville. However, this is where the similarities end - Don Alvaro is not a reckless seducer, but a descendant of Inca kings madly in love with Donna Leonora with reciprocity. As a "crossbreed", as it is perceived by the Spanish nobility, it is unpleasant for her hand. Therefore, the girl's brother, Don Carlos di Vargas, starts the chase after the lovers, convinced that the sister has stained the honor of her family, and therefore deserves death. Driven by a relentless vengeance, he acts like a professional killer - he will not rest until he kills the guilty. The opera ends with a dramatic trio for soprano, tenor and baritone, and in the finale the destiny announced in the magnificent overture is fulfilled.

The power of destiny opens a series of operas that Giuseppe Verdi wrote on commission from abroad. After the successes of Rigoletto , Troubadour and the Masquerade Ball , after the triumph of his talent, the manifestation of which was La Traviata , not immediately appreciated by his contemporaries, Verdi ended the "galley years", as he himself called the period in which, like a workman, he wrote opera after opera, pursuing new orders from theaters that always crave a new repertoire. These were times when the classics were relied less heavily on freshly written works.

Verdi's fame has crossed the borders of Italy. He composed The Power of Destiny for the tsarist court opera , Don Carlos for Paris , and Aida at the request of the Kedyv of Egypt. And to think that a decade earlier he wanted to break the pen in the Rossini pattern, or at least take a two-year break from composing. However, when a commission came from Russia, the composer decided to accept the challenge. His choice fell on a family drama by Angel Perez de Saavedra, Prince of Rivas, entitled Don Alvaro or the power of destiny from 1835. The tragic struggle of two reasons - honor and heart - attracted the composer. With a request to write a libretto, he asked Francesco Maria Piave, with whom he composed Rigoletto , La Traviataand Simon Boccanegra - they did not know yet that La Forza del Destino would be their last joint work. The premiere took place in St. Petersburg in the fall of 1862 - the audience was enthusiastic about it, Russian critics less, and nationalists who wanted to support the national Russian opera protested. Verdi was also not entirely satisfied - he decided to make dramatic and musical corrections, changing, among others, the circumstances of the duel between Carlos and Alvar and the death of Donna Leonora. In 1869, the final version was played at La Scala. The audience cheered and only one man in the audience whistled, but he was remembered by Verdi and that made his mood weighty.

The power of destiny is considered to be an opera a bit too elaborate, excessively abundant in episodic characters, like the Gypsy Preziosilla (after all, the mezzo-soprano should have something to sing too), overloaded with incredible events. Nevertheless, he does not leave the world scenes, losing none of his attractiveness. The best proof is the co-production of the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the National Opera in Warsaw, as a result of which The Power of Destiny is directed by Mariusz Treliński. This will be his third performance for the famous MET, after the diptych by Jolanta Piotr Tchaikovsky and  Bluebeard's Castle by Béla Bartók, as well as Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner.
