At the origin of La Périchole, we find the story of the life of a Peruvian actress and courtesan Camila Périchole, itself inspired by that of a historical figure, Micaëla Villegas known as "la perra chola" (literally "bitch of mestizo"), who was in her time an actress and above all mistress of the Viceroy of Peru Don Manuel. Mérimée had already been inspired by it for her comedy Le Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement , where under the pen of Offenbach's librettists, she became a street singer. More “political” in its caricature of the power of the upper echelons than La Vie parisienne, La Périchole nevertheless exudes the immoral and libertine spirit that made the success of the musician. And as for La Vie parisiennefrom last winter are brought together here French singers who have all already brilliantly rubbed shoulders with this repertoire which requires both musicality and theatricality. And what about the Marc Minkowski – Laurent Pelly tandem to set to music and stage this comic opera which likes to graze with the absurd of the situation? The conductor made it the first recording on historical instruments for the Palazzetto Bru Zane and Laurent Pelly brilliantly explored almost all the facets of the musician (this is the fourteenth work by Offenbach that he has staged). In short, how can we not succumb to getting carried away too?

A l’origine de La Périchole, on trouve le récit de la vie d’une comédienne et courtisane péruvienne Camila Périchole, lui-même inspiré de celui d’un personnage historique, Micaëla Villegas dite « la perra chola » (littéralement « chienne de métisse »), qui fut en son temps actrice et surtout maîtresse du vice-roi du Pérou Don Manuel. Mérimée s’en était déjà inspiré pour sa comédie Le Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement, où sous la plume des librettistes d’Offenbach, elle devint chanteuse des rues. Plus « politique » par sa caricature du pouvoir des hautes sphères que La Vie parisienne, La Périchole embaume néanmoins de cet esprit immoral et libertin qui ont fait le succès du musicien. Et comme pour La Vie parisienne de l’hiver dernier sont ici réunis des chanteurs français qui se sont déjà tous frottés avec brio à ce répertoire qui exige tout autant musicalité que théâtralité. Et que dire du tandem Marc Minkowski – Laurent Pelly pour mettre en musique et en scène cet opéra bouffe qui aime à frôler avec l’absurde de situation ? Le chef en a fait le premier enregistrement sur instruments historiques pour le Palazzetto Bru Zane et Laurent Pelly a exploré avec brio presque toutes les facettes du musicien (c’est le quatorzième ouvrage d’Offenbach qu’il met en scène). Bref, comment ne pas succomber nous aussi à se laisser griser ?
