The Carltheater in Vienna commissioned Puccini to compose a Viennese operetta to the libretto by Alfred M. Willner and Heinz Reichert. Puccini did not want to write a number operetta with spoken texts, but a through-composed piece. In form it has become an opera, but the piece is imbued with the flavor of Viennese operetta.
