In 1852, Verdi saw the premiere of Dumas's play The Lady with the Camellias. Traviata (tra via= off the road) is an adaptation of this story. The main character worked as a fashion goods seller, until her beauty and a desire for adventure opened the way for her to the noble social classes, and she became one of the most famous courtesans of Paris.

Verdi 1852-ben látta Dumas A kaméliás hölgy című drámájának premierjét. A Traviata (tra via= útról letért) ennek a történetnek a feldolgozása. A főhősnő divatáru-eladóként dolgozott, míg szépsége és kalandvágya meg nem nyitotta az utat számára az előkelő társadalmi rétegek felé, és egyike nem lett Párizs leghíresebb kurtizánjainak.
