Nell’inverno del 1852 Giuseppe Verdi è a Parigi. Qui, al Théâtre du Vaudeville, assiste ad una delle prime rappresentazioni della Dame aux camélias, riduzione teatrale del romanzo di Alexandre Dumas figlio. Il dramma della cortigiana Marguerite Gautier, modellata sulla vera Marie Duplessis, che sfida le convenzioni borghesi e cerca una redenzione nell’amore di Armand, colpisce profondamente il compositore. Il soggetto della nuova opera è quindi deciso e il 6 marzo 1853 al Teatro La Fenice di Venezia va in scena La traviata. Ma la censura non può tollerare un realismo tanto scabroso e impone di retrodatare la vicenda in un più rassicurante “1700 circa”. Forse è anche  per questo che la prima si rivela un fiasco. Come scriverà infatti lo stesso Verdi, lamentandosi delle troppe edulcorazioni: “Han fatto la Traviata pura ed innocente. Tante grazie! Una puttana deve essere sempre puttana. Se nella notte splendesse il sole non vi sarebbe più notte.”
