"God, make him call back!" An abandoned woman is the only character, her voice the only one in this opera, that draws an intimate portrait of a person in a hopeless situation. The young woman is only connected to the outside world via her telephone. She denies the separation so as not to feel it. The absence of the beloved man, who already has a new one, becomes even more palpable through the phone than through his mere absence. So the young woman blames the phone for the finality of the breakup. Ultimately, it eludes reality entirely in order to avoid the pain: "The things that I do not imagine do not exist." A poignant opera about external and internal distance, the topicality of which is not tied to the technical means used to communicate . Francis Poulenc (1899–1963) wrote The Human Voice , his last opera, in 1958 based on the words of the play by Jean Cocteau. Very close to the language, and yet again and again breaking out into chanson-like and operatic gestures, the work opens up an immensely wide spectrum of colors, states and feelings, which brought the singer of the Milan premiere, Denise Duval, a worldwide success. The composer developed the piano version for his singer and himself as a pianist. It also found worldwide distribution.
