In the double role of singer and conductor Barbara Hannigan, artist with extraordinary flexibility, plays Elle by Francis Poulenc, a woman at the height of pain, obsessed and rejected, trapped in a world between fantasy and reality. "I have always thought" - comments Hannigan - "that Elle's forays into unreality, illusion and control made La Voix Humaine an opera suitable to be sung and conducted simultaneously". On stage, the character's neurosis and her isolation are further enhanced by the powerful images of video designer Denis Guéguin.

Preceding the performance of La Voix Humaine are the melancholic sounds of Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. It is the same “Elle” who sings and directs Poulenc to lead Strauss's solemn reflection on the transcendence between the worldly and the divine.

The theme of transformation, predominant in the program, is developed on several levels. Hannigan's orchestral conducting technique, certainly unconventional, emphasizes the psychological drama: the gestures intended for the orchestra enhance the soprano's vocal gestures and the vocal expressiveness inspires the direction movements.
