Burnout leads successful businesswoman Liza Elliott to seek help from psychoanalysis. Between chamber drama and musical opulence, a work was created in 1941, the focus of which is a woman who despairs of the restrictive judgments of those around her. Kurt Weill's musically and dramaturgically exceptional piece Lady in the Dark combines two opposite poles: the world of the greatest possible introspection, psychoanalysis, and that of maximum superficiality, the fashion industry. 

Kurt Weill's work is retrospectively divided into two central, style-defining periods: the "European Weill", who wrote theater history as the composer of Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera , and the "American Weill", who, after emigrating, continued to develop his work on Broadway in the musical genre. Premiered in 1941, the work creates opulent musical sequences from chamber play-like scenes and offers Liza Elliott, a prime role for a “leading lady” who stands for both social and personal emancipation.

Ein Burnout lässt die erfolgreiche Geschäftsfrau Liza Elliott Hilfe in der Psychoanalyse suchen. Zwischen Kammerspiel und Musical-Opulenz entstand 1941 ein Werk, in dessen Mittelpunkt eine Frau steht, die an den einschränkenden Urteilen ihrer Umwelt verzweifelt. Kurt Weills musikalisch wie dramaturgisch außergewöhnliches Stück Lady in the Dark vereint in sich zwei Gegenpole: die Welt der größtmöglichen Innerlichkeit, die Psychoanalyse, und jene maximaler Oberflächlichkeit, die Modeindustrie. 

Kurt Weills Schaffen wird retrospektiv in zwei zentrale, stilbildende Perioden eingeteilt: der „europäische Weill“, der als Komponist von Bertolt Brechts Dreigroschenoper Theatergeschichte schrieb, und der „amerikanische Weill“, der nach seiner Emigration sein Schaffen am Broadway im Genre Musical weiterentwickelte. 1941 uraufgeführt lässt das Werk aus kammerspielartigen Schauspielszenen opulente Musical-Sequenzen entstehen und bietet mit Liza Elliott eine Paraderolle für eine „Leading Lady“, die sowohl für gesellschaftliche als auch persönliche Emanzipation steht.
