The opera Lakmé is one of the most representative works of the French composer Delibes. Upon the successful premiere of this opera in 1883, Delibes, who specialised in composing ballet music, made a big name for himself. The name of Lakmé may be unfamiliar to most of the audience, but some arias in the opera, such as “Flower Duet” and “Bell Song”, are often heard and well remembered. In particular, “Flower Duet”, which is known as “the most beautiful female duet in the history of opera”, has appeared in lots of classic films including The American President, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, and Meet the Parents.

Lakmé is a masterpiece produced by the NCPA to expand its repertoire of global operas for the Chinese audience, as a follow-up to those by French composers Bizet, Offenbach, Saint-Saëns, Massenet and Gounod. Set in the mid-19th century, the opera tells a poignant story about the British officer Gerald falling in love with Lakmé, the daughter of Nilakantha, a priest of Brahman India, but failing to marry her. As the familiar melody begins, the audience will get a complete picture of the opera on the stage and feel Delibes' talent in melody composition.
