The premiere of the opera “The Marriage of Figaro” took place at the Vienna Burgtheater on May 1, 1786. The first two performances were conducted by the composer himself. Mozart's friend, singer Michael Kelly, recalled: “No one has ever had more brilliant success than Mozart with his Marriage of Figaro.” The theater was packed, many numbers had to be repeated, so the opera was played almost twice as long as it should have been, but the audience did not stop applauding and calling for Mozart.” The Emperor even had to give a special order: to perform only individual arias as an encore, but not entire large numbers. Then the Prague premiere of the opera took place - with even greater success. In Russia, “The Marriage of Figaro” was first performed in 1815 by a German troupe in St. Petersburg.

At the Bolshoi Theater it was first performed in 1843 by a German troupe (conductor Ivan Iohannis, director Konstantin Golland), then, in 1868, it was performed by an Italian troupe (conductor Joseph Dupont, director Nikolai Savitsky). The performance in 1926 is considered to be the first production at the Bolshoi. Conductor Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, director Andrei Petrovsky, artists Mikhail Petrovsky and Mikhail Sapegin worked on it. The next production was carried out in 1936 by conductor Fritz Stiedri, director Boris Zohn and artist Jacob Stoffer. For the 200th anniversary of Mozart, a new version was presented by Boris Pokrovsky and Georgy Ansimov (conductor - Boris Khaikin, artist - Vadim Ryndin). Their performance remained in the repertoire for over twenty years (1956 - 1978), during which time it was performed two hundred and ninety-one times. Conductor Peter Feranec, director Joachim Herz and designer Peter Sikora staged a new production in 1995. And in 2014, conductor William Lacy and young director Dmitry Belyanushkin presented their semi-concert version.

Outstanding artists of the Bolshoi Theater took part in the performances: Varvara Gaidamovich, Elena Kruglikova, Natalya Shpiller, Makvala Kasrashvili, Maria Gavrilova (Countess Almaviva), Stefania Zorich, Elena Mezheraup, Irina Maslennikova, Galina Oleinichenko, Marina Meshcheryakova (Suzanna), Anna Glukhoedova, Varvara Gagarina, Galina Vishnevskaya, Galina Borisova, Irina Dolzhenko (Cherubino), Boris Bugaisky, Alexander Modestov, Pyotr Selivanov, Vladimir Valaitis, Vladimir Redkin (Count Almaviva), Ivan Burlak, Ivan Manshavin, Mikhail Kiselev, Evgeniy Kibkalo, Vladislav Verestnikov (Figaro) .

“The Marriage of Figaro” began Mozart’s collaboration with the famous librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, which also gave the musical theater the operas “Don Giovanni” and “That’s What All Women Do.” The libretto of “The Marriage of Figaro” is based on the comedy “A Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro” (1778) - the second part of the famous Beaumarchais trilogy. The composer himself suggested turning to this plot. However, comedy was banned in Austria. So, if you believe Da Ponte’s words, the libretto and music were written in secret - in anticipation of a favorable opportunity to show the opera to theater directors or the emperor himself. The opera was ready in six weeks, and Da Ponte “bravely dared to take upon himself” the conversation with Emperor Joseph II. And he obtained permission to stage it, convincing him that he had cut everything that could “offend subtlety and decency.” In addition, the music made a great impression on Joseph II: “The Emperor listened to fragments of the opera, which he liked most wonderfully - it would not be an exaggeration to say that the opera stunned him.”

To this day, “The Marriage of Figaro” remains one of the most beloved operas in the whole world. Well-twisted intrigue, rapidly developing action, charming characters, constant disguises... “The Wedding” is filled with the joyful element of a game, a carnival, but it also has lyrical moments and deep drama.

“The beauty of this opera is that it can be turned in any direction - it is surprisingly multifaceted,” says director Evgeny Pisarev. In 2015, he presented a new interpretation of it at the Bolshoi Theater. For the director, this was the second experience of working at the opera house - and the first performance at the Bolshoi.

According to Evgeny Pisarev, he wanted to return the festive atmosphere of this opera, lost in productions of recent years. Therefore, the action of “The Marriage of Figaro” is moved to the middle of the 20th century - “the post-war period with its characteristic desire for life, joy and celebration.” When building his performance, the director also turned to the literary source: Beaumarchais's comedy, which allowed him to add new colors to the images of opera heroes. “Our performance, of course, is about love,” says Evgeny Pisarev, “everyone is in love here: Marceline, Cherubino, and the Count. Everyone cheats on each other, but not painfully, but somehow joyfully and inspiredly. And everyone doesn’t have much control over themselves - there’s too much testosterone, energy of life and thirst for happiness.” This is exactly how the director saw real Mozartianism.

Со «Свадьбы Фигаро» началось сотрудничество Моцарта со знаменитым либреттистом Лоренцо Да Понте, подарившее музыкальному театру также оперы «Дон Жуан» и «Так поступают все женщины». В основе либретто «Свадьбы Фигаро» лежит комедия «Безумный день, или Женитьба Фигаро» (1778 г.) — вторая часть известной трилогии Бомарше. Обратиться к этому сюжету предложил сам композитор. Однако в Австрии комедия была запрещена. Так что, если верить словам Да Понте, либретто и музыка писались втайне – в ожидании благоприятной возможности показать оперу директорам театров или самому императору. Опера была готова за шесть недель, и Да Понте «отважно дерзнул взять на себя» разговор с императором Йозефом II. И добился разрешения на постановку, убедив его в том, что он сократил все, что могло бы «оскорбить тонкость и благопристойность». Кроме того, музыка произвела на Йозефа II большое впечатление: «Император послушал фрагменты оперы, которые ему понравились самым чудесным образом — не было бы преувеличением сказать, что опера его ошеломила».

До сих пор «Свадьба Фигаро» остается одной из самых любимых опер во всем мире. Хорошо закрученная интрига, стремительно развивающееся действие, обаятельные персонажи, постоянные переодевания... «Свадьбу» переполняет радостная стихия игры, карнавала, но есть в ней и лирические моменты, и глубокий драматизм.

«Прелесть этой оперы в том, что ее можно обратить любой стороной — она удивительно многогранна», — считает режиссер Евгений Писарев. В 2015 году он представил в Большом театре ее новое прочтение. Для режиссера это был второй опыт работы в оперном театре – и первый спектакль в Большом.

По словам Евгения Писарева, ему хотелось вернуть праздничную атмосферу этой оперы, утраченную в постановках последних лет. Поэтому действие «Свадьбы Фигаро» перенесено в середину XX века — «послевоенное время с характерным для него желанием жизни, радости и праздника». Выстраивая свой спектакль, режиссер обращался и к литературному первоисточнику: комедии Бомарше, что позволило ему добавить новые краски к образам оперных героев. «Спектакль наш, конечно же, про любовь, — говорит Евгений Писарев, — здесь влюблены все: и Марселина, и Керубино, и Граф. Все изменяют друг другу, но не мучительно, а как-то радостно и вдохновенно. И все не очень владеют собой — слишком много тестостерона, энергии жизни и жажды счастья». Именно таким виделось постановщику настоящее моцартианство
