Le livret de cet opéra-féerie est inspiré de l’œuvre de Jules Verne, en particulier De la Terre à la Lune et Voyage au centre de la Terre. Ce dernier se plaignit du reste à son éditeur des nombreuses similitudes entre l’argument du Voyage dans la Lune et ses propres œuvres. Les librettistes Vanloo, Leterrier et Mortier entendaient tirer parti de la vogue des romans de l’écrivain qui faisaient alors l’objet d’adaptations très populaires, ainsi que de l’engouement des Parisiens pour le genre de la féerie. Celui-ci reposait notamment sur d’impressionnants effets scénographiques. Le clou du Voyage dans la Lune à cet égard est sans doute l’introduction d’un dromadaire méhari sur la scène, emprunté au Jardin d’acclimatation. Mais les décors des peintres Cornil, Fromont et Cheret impressionnent aussi beaucoup les spectateurs, avec leurs répliques réalistes de l’Observatoire de Paris, d’un haut-fourneau ou d’un volcan en éruption, et leurs représentations de lieux imaginaires : paysage lunaire, palais de verre ou galeries de nacre. La présence de grandes masses chorales et de ballets achève de donner à cette œuvre tout le brillant possible d’une production lyrique française du Second Empire.

The libretto of this opera-fairy is inspired by the work of Jules Verne, in particular From the Earth to the Moon and Journey to the Center of the Earth . The latter complained to his publisher of the many similarities between the argument of Voyage dans la Lune and his own works. The librettists Vanloo, Leterrier and Mortier intended to take advantage of the vogue for the writer's novels, which were then the subject of very popular adaptations, as well as the enthusiasm of Parisians for the genre of fairy tales. This was based in particular on impressive scenographic effects. The highlight of the Voyage to the Moonin this regard is undoubtedly the introduction of a camel camel on the stage, borrowed from the Jardin d'acclimatation. But the decorations of the painters Cornil, Fromont and Cheret also greatly impress the spectators, with their realistic replicas of the Paris Observatory, a blast furnace or an erupting volcano, and their representations of imaginary places: lunar landscape , glass palaces or mother-of-pearl galleries. The presence of large choral masses and ballets completes this work to give it all the brilliance possible of a French lyrical production of the Second Empire.
