The composer was only thirty-four years old when he wrote it. One of Donizetti's letters gives an idea of ​​how quickly he worked. Addressing his librettist, he wrote: “I have to write an opera in two weeks. I give you a week for your work. But keep in mind: we have a German diva, a tenor who stutters, a goat-voiced buffo, and a lousy French bass. With all this, you can glorify yourself. " Indeed, both became famous - both the composer and the librettist. And the tenor part was really written for a hero who stutters!
