Libretto by Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873–1954) Directed by Juraj Čiernik Ravel's opera-ballet with the subtitle fantasy in two parts is not often seen on Czech stages. It was staged at the National Theater in Prague only in 1927 (in 2000, its music only appeared as background for Jiří Kylián's very successful ballet production). All the more interesting was the production of the South Bohemian Theater in České Budějovice, which performed the piece of the year 2016 as a family opera. NDM will choose a similar approach in the upcoming production, as the opera will be intended primarily for children. The libretto was created by a writer named Colette and it is a fairytale story of a disobedient boy who torments animals and destroys nature and things around him. However, things come to life and rebel against the naughty child, the trees and animals complain about the garden. Experienced fear will teach the child enough, and love and kindness will eventually find a place in his heart. The piece provided Ravel with inspiration for danceable and rhythmically expansive music that never got old for its wit. It is a classic example of an impressionistic score, made special by a whole series of sound-painting effects. We present the opera as part of the Ostrava Opera Academy, the FU OU project and the NDM Opera.

Ravelova opera-balet s podtitulem fantazie ve dvou částech nebývá na českých jevištích příliš k vidění. V Národním divadle v Praze byla inscenována pouze roku 1927 (v roce 2000 se její hudba objevila již jen jako podklad pro velmi úspěšnou baletní inscenaci Jiřího Kyliána). O to více zaujala inscenace Jihočeského divadla v Českých Budějovicích, které dílko roku 2016 předvedlo jako rodinnou operu. NDM zvolí v připravované inscenaci obdobný přístup, neboť opera bude určena především dětským divákům. Libreto vytvořila spisovatelka jménem Colette a jde o pohádkový příběh neposlušného chlapce, který trápí zvířata a ničí přírodu a věci kolem sebe. Věci však ožijí a vzbouří se proti zlobivému dítěti, ze zahrady si stěžují stromy i zvířata. Prožitý strach dá dítěti dostatečně za vyučenou a v jeho srdci nakonec nalezne místo láska a dobrota. Předloha poskytla Ravelovi inspiraci k taneční a rytmicky rozverné hudbě, která pro svůj vtip nikdy nezastarala. Jde o klasický příklad impresionistické partitury, ozvláštněné celou řadou zvukomalebných efektů.
