Offenbach's popular opera is a bittersweet love story, told inside and outside of reality, inside and outside Messehallen Arenum. Hoffmann is a poet and artist. To portray his great love - Stella - Hoffmann must resort to fairy tales; not just one, but three, about three different female characters: Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia. Three wonderful, dramatic, heartbreaking and passionate stories, about love, intrigue, rivals, jealousy, beauty and despair. Olympia is the dazzlingly beautiful, but lifeless, mechanical doll that Hoffmann is tricked into believing is a real woman. Not least, he is amazed at her row-breaking and sparkling coloratura song. Giulietta is just as beautiful, but far more flattering and seductive - not least when she sings Offenbach's well-known and longing Barcarole. If Hoffmann's love for her is reciprocated, you will get an answer by the sea in Solheimsviken. Antonia is a singer, but who is too weak to perform her art. She loves Hoffmann's songs more than her husband, and is unable to suppress her passionate desire to sing, which results in her death. Hoffmann's fairy tales belong to the world of fantasy. How he masters the real world is another question. Offenbach's opera takes place in both of these worlds, where you as a listener and spectator must take part. While summer is slowly in full swing, use this unique opportunity to stretch it even further; and experience folk opera in an unfamiliar, surprising and tradition-breaking opera environment and direction. Let the many soloists with character and acting talent and an obvious Bergen Opera Choir take you into Hoffmann's world, on stages both outside and inside. Offenbach's music performed by the Opera Bergen Orchestra under the direction of Anne Randine Øverby, is as flattering and beautiful as it fits in on dark late summer evenings - it's just to be captivated.
