At the center of Jacques Offenbach's only serious opera that was able to establish itself on the stage is ETA Hoffmann, the prototype of the German romantic artist. Of course, the composer was not interested in the poet's musical biography. For him, the author of the fantastic stories became the prototype of the romantic artist with his life on the edge of the abyss, his doubts, great ideas, deep crises. Although the piece is based on Hoffmann's biography, it mixes it with motifs from his works and those of other romantic authors, resulting in a very unique artistic drama. In his famous Offenbach study, Siegfried Kracauer describes this opera as a self-portrait of the composer: just as Hoffmann does not succeed in finding the happiness he longs for, the composer was denied throughout his life to write the great opera he had dreamed of. Although Offenbach's Child of Pain remained unfinished, it quickly won the hearts of the audience with its unique mixture of bizarre, nightmarish, comical and soulful moments and secured a permanent place in the opera repertoire of the world's stages. General Music Director Fabio Luisi conducts this revival, the title role is sung by Bryan Hymel, the three female lead roles are sung by Jane Archibald, Rachel Harnisch and Alexandra Tarniceru. comic and soulful moments quickly captured the hearts of the audience and secured a permanent place in the operatic repertoire of the world's stages. Im Mittelpunkt der einzigen ernsten Oper Jacques Offenbachs, die sich an den Bühnen  durchsetzen konnte, steht E.T.A. Hoffmann, der Prototyp des deutschen romantischen Künstlers. Freilich interessierte den Komponisten keine musikalische Biografie des Dichters. Ihm wurde der Autor der fantastischen Erzählungen zum Prototyp des romantischen Künstlers mit seinem Leben am Rande des Abgrunds, seinen Zweifeln, grossen Einfällen, tiefen Krisen. Das Stück basiert zwar auf der Biografie Hoffmanns, vermischt sie aber mit Motiven aus seinen Werken und denen anderer romantischer Autoren, so dass ein ganz eigenes Künstlerdrama entstand. In seiner berühmten Offenbach-Studie beschreibt Siegfried Kracauer diese Oper als ein Selbstporträt des Komponisten: So wie es Hoffmann nicht gelingt, das ersehnte Liebesglück zu finden, blieb es dem Komponisten zeit seines Lebens versagt, seine erträumte grosse Oper zu schreiben. Wenn Offenbachs Schmerzenskind auch unvollendet blieb, gewann es mit seiner eingenwilligen Mischung aus bizarr-alptraumhaften, komischen und gefühlvollen Momenten schnell die Herzen des Publikums und sicherte sich einen festen Platz im Opernrepertoire der Bühnen der Welt. Generalmusikdirektor Fabio Luisi dirigiert diese Wiederaufnahme, die Titelpartie singt Bryan Hymel, die drei weiblichen Hauptrollen verkörpern Jane Archibald, Rachel Harnisch und Alexandra Tarniceru.
