Un sujet d’une cruelle actualité pour cet opéra mettant en scène le destin de jeunes réfugiés en 1940 et de nos jours : une méditation scénique et musicale décisive, intemporelle, sur le déracinement, la violence, mais aussi l’espoir et l’humanité. 

« L’air est empli de sons et de flammes… » C’est autour du rôle de Glyndebourne dans l’accueil des réfugiés du Blitz de Londres, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, qu’est né ce projet d’opéra mettant en scène des enfants et des adolescents. Travaillant de concert, la librettiste Laura Attridge et le compositeur Lewis Murphy ont dressé un parallèle entre la situation de 1940 et celle des migrants d’aujourd’hui traversant la Méditerranée – et y perdant parfois la vie –, avant de se presser à Calais depuis 2016 : deux drames historiques et humains, particulièrement ressentis par des enfants violemment catapultés vers l’inconnu et brutalement privés de leurs repères linguistiques et culturels. 

Bien loin d’être désespéré, puisqu’il met en scène l’humanisme et la solidarité, Belongings n’en exprime pas moins la souffrance des innocents. La citation d’un choral de Bach en témoigne dans la partition, Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld der Welt : l’agneau qui apparaît, portant les péchés du monde.

A topical subject for this opera dedicated to young audiences, depicting the fate of young refugees in 1940 and today: a timeless meditation that crosses generations, carrying a message of comfort and hope. 

It was around Glyndebourne's role in welcoming refugees from the London Blitz during the Second World War that this opera project featuring children and adolescents was born. Working together, librettist Laura Attridge and composer Lewis Murphy have drawn a parallel between the situation of 1940 and that of today's migrants crossing the Mediterranean: two historical and human situations, strongly felt by children catapulted towards the 'unknown. 

Far from being desperate, since it stages dialogue and solidarity between communities, Belongings also expresses the suffering of the innocent. The quotation from a Bach chorale bears witness to this in the score, Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld der Welt : the lamb which appears, bearing the sins of the world.
