L'incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea), Monteverdi
Opera
Opera is often referred to as the first opera on a historical theme, but it is a living story full of intrigue, passion and violence. Librettist Giovanni Francesco Busenello drew on Tacit's Chronicles. The Roman emperor Nerone rejects his wife Ottavia because he has an affair with Poppe, whom he eventually crowns the Empress. In the opera we also find the historical figure of the philosopher Seneca, written for deep bass, who commits suicide at the emperor's command. In addition to these characters, the opera also has a number of other roles that bring comic elements to the opera, such as a nanny and two soldiers. The opera will be staged on the basis of a historically informed interpretation of baroque music.
