Lobgesang Mendelssohn

Lobgesang means “Song of Praise” and gives its name to this Symphony-Cantata where Felix Mendelssohn stamps his creative maturity. Written for solo voices, choir, orchestra and organ, on texts highlighted in the biblical scriptures, it is built in a hybrid style, somewhere between the sacred and the profane, between contemporaneity and the musical references of the past. It is a very structured musical proposal that leads from darkness to the splendor of God's word; from ignorance to the illustrated spirit. It was premiered under the direction of the composer himself in June 1840 as part of the Gutenberg Festival, held in Leipzig. Mendelssohn then resided in the city of printers for five years, during which time he transformed the Gewandhaus into one of the most important European musical institutions at the time.

A representação do sofrimento de Cristo na Cruz é assumida neste programa por três compositores temporalmente distantes entre si: Haydn, Brahms e Martin. Por um lado Haydn, o pai da sinfonia, utiliza a  força da tonalidade, Fá menor, como elemento crucial para uma viagem emocional que extravasa todos os limites (1768). Já no final da sua vida, Brahms utiliza nove versos luteranos para, através do órgão, expressar toda a carga expressiva e religiosa das palavras na sua música (1896). Por último, das palavras às imagens, Martin abre uma via privilegiada de comunicação com o seu mundo religioso e espiritual, encarnando a voz de Cristo num instrumento solista, o violino, tendo como inspiração seis painéis que retratam a Paixão de Cristo (1973).

Parece-nos que estes três diferentes caminhos, estas três diferentes viagens, desembocam no mesmo lugar: expressar, vivenciar, reproduzir o estado d’alma deste momento tão importante espiritualmente. Porém, de realçar também, que o ponto de partida tem um nome em comum, J.S. Bach; cada um dos três compositores contém em si uma espécie de reflexo inspirador deste compositor, tão importante para a história da música ocidental.
Este concerto é sem dúvida um momento introspetivo, de vivência espiritual interna.  – Pedro Neves
