A new production of Lohengrin comes to the Bayerische Staatsoper, setting of many premieres of Wagner’s works, produced by the celebrated Kornél Mundruczò as part of a long-term collaboration with dramaturge Kata Wéber. A first-class Wagnerian cast contributes to the otherworldly atmosphere of the fabled Middle Ages—from Grammy nominee Mika Kares in the role of the king of Germany to Klaus Florian Vogt as Lohengrin and the elegant Johanni van Oostrum as Elsa. François-Xavier Roth, chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, conducts this magical production, from the arrival of King Henry in Brabant through the grand revelations of the last act, as if in a state of grace.

In this lyric drama Wagner accomplished something that Schumann thought impossible: he put into music, under the guise of an historical drama, a fairy tale with a tragic ending—elements which might seem mutually exclusive. Based on the medieval epic poem written by Wolfram von Eschenbach, Lohengrin takes its name from the Swan Knight, keeper of the Grail and son of the equally famous Parsifal, another Wagnerian character. This almost messianic hero comes to the aid of Elsa of Brabant, falsely accused of fratricide by the power-hungry Friedrich of Telramund and his wife Ortrud. Playing this Macbethian couple, baritone Johan Reuter and soprano Anja Kampe are thematically opposed to the main characters’ purity, demonstrated by the famous chorus of the third act, still played today during wedding ceremonies.

The Hungarian film and theater director Kornél Mundruczó, whose productions are shown at the world's most important festivals and stages, has also been working in the field of opera for several years. His production of The Makropulos Case (2016) at the Vlaamse Opera was nominated for the International Opera Awards, and last year he premiered Peter Eötvös' opera Sleeplessat the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden. He is also the founder and director of the independent theater company Proton Theater. With his team (including stage designer Monika Pormale and costume designer Ania Axer) he is now making his debut at the Bavarian State Opera. For the first time in an opera production at this house, the musical director is the conductor François-Xavier Roth, who is known for historically informed performance practice as well as for unusual program combinations and is regularly invited by top orchestras. Klaus Florian Vogt sings the title role, Marlis Petersen will be seen as Elsa for the first time.

Der ungarische Film- und Theaterregisseur Kornél Mundruczó, dessen Produktionen auf den weltweit bedeutenden Festivals und Bühnen gezeigt werden, arbeitet seit einigen Jahren auch im Opernbereich. Seine Inszenierung von Die Sache Makropulos (2016) an der Vlaamse Opera wurde für die International Opera Awards nominiert, im vergangenen Jahr inszenierte er die Uraufführung von Peter Eötvös’ Oper Sleepless an der Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Außerdem ist er Gründer und Leiter der unabhängigen Theatergruppe Proton Theater. Mit seinem Team (darunter die Bühnenbildnerin Monika Pormale und die Kostümbildnerin Ania Axer) gibt er nun sein Debüt an der Bayerischen Staatsoper. Die Musikalische Leitung hat, erstmals bei einer Opernproduktion an diesem Haus, der Dirigent François-Xavier Roth, der für historisch informierte Aufführungspraxis ebenso wie für ungewöhnliche Programmkombinationen bekannt ist und regelmäßig von Spitzenorchestern eingeladen wird. Klaus Florian Vogt singt die Titelpartie, als Elsa wird  Johanni van Oostrum zu erleben sein.
