A little boy has disappeared, the heir to the throne of an ancient empire. The sister is accused of his death. Instead of defending herself, she calls on a dream figure to stand by her side. And her knight, he actually comes, wins her cause and her heart. She should never ask who he actually is. Elsa and Lohengrin could now be a happy ruling couple. But the ban on questions contradicts the urge for knowledge, the romantic wonder is opposed by the desire to know, enlightenment is not compatible with blind faith. The doubts that her opponents awaken in Elsa - Ortrud, who adheres to the old gods, and Telramund, who has lost his honor - are sown naturally in every person. In Wagner's music, the seductive and risky aspects of Lohengrin's wish are expressed, as he longs for a love for himself. The new production by Kornél Mundruczó investigates the ambivalent potential that lies in the design of a human being who is superior to the normal and endowed with supernatural powers. For him, Lohengrin is “the most provocative inhumane figure in the entire operatic cosmos.” The action takes place in a posthuman world in which a group of survivors, full of fear and questions, hope for salvation.
