The premiere took place on October 25, 2018
“Surprisingly, the first examples of opera as a genre were its greatest peaks, which, four hundred years ago and today, are admired”, - says Georgy Isahakyan, one of the discoverers and promoters of old operas in Russia, a director who staged a number of Baroque and Renaissance operas, including Alcina and Hercules by Georg Friedrich Handel, The Chinese Woman by Christoph Gluck, Orpheus Claudio Monteverdi, "The Game of Soul and Body" by Emilio de Cavalieri, "Love Kills" by Juan Hidalgo de Polanco and others. Thanks to him, today in Moscow, at the Natalia Sats Theater, you can see old operas - and not in the format of a festival show, but as repertoire productions. He became the initiator of the "Old Opera Weeks", which include performances and master classes by maestro Andrew Lawrence-King, the world-famous virtuoso harpist, founder of The Harp Consort, winner of Grammy, Echo, Gramophone, etc. awards, one of the world's most respected performers and conductors of early music.
And today the Natalia Sats Theater has become a real center of the old opera in Moscow. Orpheus by Claudio Monvederdi became the fourth repertoire production in the cycle "Old Operas at the Theater of Natalia Sats", which already includes "Alcina, or the Magic Island" by Georg Friedrich Handel, "The Game of Soul and Body" by Emilia de Cavalieri, the first Italian opera of 1600 year of creation, and "Love Kills" by Juan Hidalgo de Polanco to a libretto by Pedro Claderon, the first Spanish opera written in 1660.
"Orpheus" is in Italian with Russian subtitles.
