The myth of Orpheus – a poet who, by the sheer grace of his song, obtains from the Underworld that they return to him the one he loves, who disappeared too soon – haunts the origins of lyrical art. To echo the Coronation of Poppaea , Monteverdi's last opera, Leonardo García Alarcón and the Cappella Mediterranea perform a concert version of L'Orfeo, the composer's first opera, often considered the first true opera in history. In this humanist eulogy of the civilizing power of art and the mastery of passions ending in luminous apotheosis, Monteverdi deploys an infinite variety of forms, styles and atmospheres: dance rhythms abound; the most eloquent declamation alternates with the most beautiful melodic inspirations and the most spectacular vocalizations. After having embodied Testo in Combattimento, the theory of the black swan (2021), Valerio Contaldo confronts the composer's other supremely complex and virtuoso score, culminating in a crossing of the Underworld where beauty competes with difficulty.
