Wer anders als Orpheus, der antike mythische Sänger, konnte der erste Held der Oper sein? Der Künstler, der Musiker, der mit seinen Tönen den Tod überwindet, ist das fleischgewordene Sinnbild dieser Kunstform. Für einen Augenblick nur befreit er die Geliebte aus der Unterwelt, bevor sie wieder in den Schatten verschwindet. Und auch inhaltlich ist in der Oper von 1607 schon alles vorhanden, was das Musiktheater seitdem umtreibt: Tod, Gefühlsexzess oder (Takt-)Maß, die Macht der Liebe und die Macht der Musik. Aber wo bleibt eigentlich Eurydike? Ist sie nur der Schatten in Orpheus’ Geschichte? Was sind ihre Wünsche und will sie überhaupt zurück aus der Unterwelt?

Claudio Monteverdi schrieb seinen ORFEO im Geiste der Florentina Camerata, einer Vereinigung von Musikern, der es um eine musikalische Neubelebung der antiken Tragödie zu tun war. Dem nachspürend, übersetzen der Komponist Michael Wilhelmi und die Regisseurin Claudia Meyer in ihrer Bearbeitung Monteverdis Musik ins Heute. Musikali­sche Arrangements, Filmsequenzen und Texte der zeitge­nössischen Literatur hauchen dem „dramma per musica“, diesem Musikdrama aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, neues Leben ein. Im Zentrum steht dabei eine zeitlose Frage: Wie weiter­leben nach dem Verlust eines geliebten Menschen?

Who but Orpheus, the ancient mythical singer, could be the opera's first hero? The artist, the musician, who overcomes death with his tones, is the incarnate symbol of this art form. For just a moment, he frees his beloved from the underworld before she disappears back into the shadows. And in terms of content, the opera from 1607 already contains everything that has driven music theater since then: death, emotional excess or (bar) measure, the power of love and the power of music. But where is Eurydice? Is she just the shadow in Orpheus' story? What are her wishes and does she even want to come back from the underworld?

Claudio Monteverdi wrote his ORFEO in the spirit of the Florentina Camerata, an association of musicians concerned with a musical revival of ancient tragedy. In pursuit of this, the composer Michael Wilhelmi and the director Claudia Meyer translate Monteverdi's music into the present day in their adaptation. Musical arrangements, film sequences and texts from contemporary literature breathe new life into the "dramma per musica", this musical drama from the 17th century. The focus is on a timeless question: how to live after the loss of a loved one?
