Gaetano Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) has everything a real music lover should attract: a passionate love story, the romantic atmosphere of Northern Britain, where the action takes place, and, of course, beautiful bel canto music. G. Donizetti was inspired to create the opera by Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor (1819), which was extremely popular at that time. The plot conflict is based on a long-standing enmity between two Scottish families - Ravenswood and Ashton - and is complicated by the love of Henry Ashton's sister Lucia for Ravenswood's son Edgardo, which is perceived by others as a dishonor for the entire Ashton family. Wanting to improve the shaken political situation, Henry intends to marry his sister to Lord Arthur Backlow. To do this, he tries to break her resistance with a fake letter of infidelity to Edgardo. Shocked by her lover's betrayal, Lucia signs a marriage contract with Lord Backlow, which becomes the starting point of a whole series of tragic events... Love, jealousy, murder, madness… Lucia di Lammermoor is considered one of Donizetti's most popular operas. The most virtuoso dramatic role of Lucia has always been and is included in the repertoire of the most famous singers in the world, including Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballe, Edita Gruberova. No less impressive is Edgardo's tenor part; the closer the end of the opera, the more extremely high notes it contains. Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti is an example of the Italian romantic musical drama. Having absorbed the operatic traditions of the previous period, it seems to be building a bridge from the musical theater of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to the dramatic operas of Giuseppe Verdi.
