Milan 1772: After the great success of "Mitridate", Mozart was commissioned to write an opera seria for the Milan carnival season. The text is by Giovanni di Gamerra (1743-1803), whose fondness for the uncanny - he had his wife's corpse dug up and burned so that he could always take her ashes with him - is also reflected in the libretto to "Lucio Silla". knocks down. As usual, Mozart wrote the arias specifically for the singers during rehearsals. In view of the limited ability of the singer in the title role, who stood in at short notice for the originally intended, sick castrato Rauzzini, Mozart only set two of the four arias intended for Silla.

The opera was a great success, but Mozart never received another commission in Italy and was unable to establish himself there throughout his life.
The action takes place in Rome in 79 BC. and tells of the Roman dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix and his - historically guaranteed - resignation.

Cecilio, whom Silla had banished from Rome like many of his enemies, has secretly returned there to see his bride Giunia again. Giunia is the daughter of Silla's mortal enemy Gaius Marius. Silla wants to force Giunia to marry him, but she refuses out of love for Cecilio. Cecilio wants to murder Silla, but fails and is sentenced to death. In prison, Cecilio and Giunia say goodbye to each other. But Silla surprisingly shows mercy: he renounces Giunia and gives her to Cecilio, whom he acquits, as his wife. All exiles are allowed to return home, Silla resigns and restores the Republic, after which he is hailed as a great victor.

Director Jürgen Flimm does not believe in the conciliatory end of Mozart's "Lucio Silla": The Roman dictator is forced to forgive him and then murdered. The next dictator is already waiting...
